Currency Moroccan Dirham (Dh) - approx 12Dh = £1.00 April 2010

You can get good exchange rates for GB Pounds and other cash at one of the many competitive exchanges in Marrakech.

I understand that some cash cards will work in ATMs but you must inform your bank that you are going to use your card in  Morocco, beforehand, or risk having your card retained at the first attempt.

I used my credit card (Mastercard) for ATM withdrawals (March 2010) without problem and I did not warn my bank. However, my bank (HSBC) charges a fee for this use, and offers somewhat poorer exchange rates than the local exchanges (as well as charging interest on cash withdrawals). Another disadvantqage of using a card is that the cashpoint will issue only fairly large denomination notes. - Not helpful when you are bartering for small items.

Note that although your credit card may work in an ATM, credit cards are not widely used in Morocco for other types of transaction (payment for accomodation or meals for instance).

There is a balance to be struck between the economy of carrying cash, and the security of relying on a card for cash withdrawals.
